EMRTC has played an integral part in the identification and characterization of non-ideal and improvised explosives. The non-ideal explosives testing program includes synthesis, small-scale safety testing, scale-up procedures, aging studies, and explosive characterization testing. The goal of the program is to provide the customer with a thorough knowledge of the explosives stability, explosive power/output, and possible applications. Critical diameter, initiation techniques and compatibility data are determined during the classification testing. Other tests that can be performed include wedge tests, cylinder tests, and aquarium tests, all of which are used to develop an equation of state model for each of these explosive types.
